<span style="font-size: large;">This well-presented and enjoyable game was hosted by Vic Gregoire at BattleGroup Boston's 2015 HAVOC in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. This is how he describes the scenario in the official convention announcement: </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"</span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">Putting
plans for Barbarossa on hold, on April 6th the 2nd Panzer Division
began its drive into Yugoslavia headed for Greece. Meeting only minor
resistance they pressed on into Greece. On the 8th they ran into their
first real resistance, the men of the 19th Motorized Division, ready to
fight!"</span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I
was fortunate to be able to play in the game and was given the command of the Greek defenders with Vic serving as both GM and C-in-C of the attacking Germans. Vic proved to be, as
always, a thoughtful gamemaster as well as a worthy opponent. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The
rules used were a simplified version of Command Decision, Test of
Battle 4. The charming and effective layout that Vic created made for an attractive backdrop for the action while the vehicles and figures are nicely rendered using 1/76 and
1/72 models.</span></td></tr>

In the game the Germans advance units were being held up longer than they were in reality. In fact the entire Greek 19th Motorized Division quickly succumbed to the Germans who captured Thessaloniki on 9th April so the game's outcome yielded a somewhat contrafactual result. </span><br />

I painted up just three of the fine 1/72 Conquistador figures from Revell set and posed them against the SHS Mediterranean Church (still wip; please see elsewhere in this blog).<br />
<br />
This is a small experiment as it's the first time I used Vallejo alcohol-based metallic pigment. I think they have come out rather well so I will paint more of the figures in the same way soon.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday I bought a small Ultrasonic cleaner with 35 watts power and 16 fluid oz. capacity. It is normally used for cleaning jewelry and other fine metals and I believe railway enthusiasts use it to clean etched brass frets and metal train parts. I recall that I read somewhere that it can also be used to shake up paint bottles, which seemed to me a good enough reason to pick one up.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I filled the cleaner with tap water and began to place handfuls of 17ml Vallejo paint bottles into it. Most of my Vallejo bottles are several years old and have not been stirred/shaken very often since I purchased them. Even the metal pellets I put into some of them had become impossible to shake loose due to settled pigments. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I put each batch of bottles through one to two 3-min cycles (auto-timed default for the model I have). I then took the bottles out and towel dried them. The result was better than I expected. After the ultrasonic treatment, a quick shake was all it took to re-integrate the pigments with the medium/carrying fluids.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I am quite happy with this purchase and can't wait to see what else I may be able to use this machine for. Perhaps I will even use it to clean something some day...</div>

Mediterranean Church Progress ( photo colors are more vivid than in real life):<br />
1. Started work on the tower.<br />
2. Scratched another gallery using foamcore, tamiya masking tape and toothpicks, as the resin original is somewhat lacking.<br />
3. Started painting on the one-piece terrain base and church crypt/basement. The painting on the basement/crypt may be a little too cartoonish now.<br />

Here are some further shots of the Italeri church and the SHS Mediterranean church. You can see the various parts that make up the SHS church and the interior of the Italeri church in its current state.<br />
<br />
One thing I should probably say is that while the SHS church is looking quite nice now it's a bit of a horror in terms of clean up and preparation. The resin of the model I have is filled with bubbles and pinholes; it is also quite brittle and already broken off in some places. I have had to use styrene bits to reconstitute some of the windows, for instance.<br />
<br />
Next I will try to deck out the SHS church with icons and frescoes and generally make the interior look pretty.<br />
<br />
I also threw in a picture of all the small ruined pieces together.<br />
<br />
Sorry for being such a crappy photographer. I am lucky to have a very nice Nikon Digital SLR but still can't take photos that are worth anything! :-(<br />

Working on the Italeri church model has inspired me to to start on painting other church models that I have collected over the years. Here is the current progress on my 20mm Shell Hole Scenics Mediterranean church.<br />
<br />
The resin model consists of:<br />
- a large base representing the church's foundation walls and an underground crypt, an exterior stone wall and lots and lots of stairs<br />
- the main church structure (this can be used alone or with the base and tower)<br />
- 3 roof pieces<br />
- a tower in 2 pieces<br />
- some interior bits representing a balcony and pulpit.<br />

The tower still needs lots of work. I am considering adding a section to the middle to raise the tower's overall height. With the pictured addition, the SHS tower will be just as tall as the Italeri church bell tower.<br />

<div>
(please scroll down for progress report)<br />
<br />
I received my Plastruct HO-scale Spanish roof tiles (PS-122) yesterday. Huzzah!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to dry fit them on the Italeri church, side by side with some of the original slate roofing, so I can see whether they give the right look. You can see some comparison shots below.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Plastruct sheet is not wide enough to to cover the entire main roof. But the apparent joints on the photos will disappear once the sheets are glued down and painted. I am still undecided as to whether I should extend the roof tiles to cover the bottom where Italeri has moulded in roof gutters (but not down spouts).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally, I invited an expert to check out my new roof. She gave it a good sniff and seemed to approve of the change.</div>

Just to please Ray who has been skeptical of my fussing over the roof, I made new ones using cellular foamboard, to which I added internal supports, so that I can put the tile sheets on them without using up the original parts. I can now save the slate rooftop as an alternative and have two different looks for the church!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I finally decided to purchase this fine church model despite already having several churches in my collection. Once I received it in the post over the weekend, I had to start on it even though there are many other projects ahead of it in my work queue. This is the state of progress on Day 2. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The most time-consuming task has been filling and re-scribing the cornerstones after joining the walls together. I have only done this so far for the bell tower and the smaller side structure. The main walls have not yet been glued together as I plan to add some "printed" frescoes and the like to the interior walls first. I have also added some windows and steel bars to some of the window apertures (they are hard to make out in the photos).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am rather unhappy with how the "slate roofs" that come with the model look. The individual slates are impossibly large in size and the overall effect is less than convincing to my eyes. I plan to replace the roofing material with a sheet of HO scale Spanish tiles that I just ordered from HobbyLinc.com.</div>

As I still do not have any scenery or building that would be appropriate for Siam (Ayutthaya) at the moment, I have to fall back on an Angkor-Wat inspired piece. This is an aquarium decoration representation of the Angkor Thom Gate that I happen to have in my stash. It won't work for Siamese battles of course but will at least be appropriate for the Siamese campaigns against the Khmer.</div>

Compare the photo above of the real thing and those below where I added some small "forest elephants" and a 1/72 figure to show the scale of the model. Based on the relative size of the human figures, I believe the aquarium decoration to be about 1/144 in scale. Even so, the model still has quite a commanding presence for 1/72 even at half its actual dimension.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So far I have only modified the piece by drybrushing it with a tan/mud color. I will put in still more weathering and highlights later on.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Made by Hudson & Allen, this sizable bridge model is 20 inches long. It is nicely cast in foam resin. I had to hollow out the foam resin from underneath the arches but otherwise the model comes in one piece and is already ready for primer and paint.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I sprayed a grey automotive primer on first. Then I dry-brushed the cobblestones in dark grey, the stones in mud and light grey, and painted the area under the arches in green black. The whole painting process took about 15 mins, which is as close to instant gratification as I can ever hope for. I may still want to seal with a matte varnish and then weather/wash with some oils. If I am truly ambitious, I will even paint in variegated stone colors as well (I may experiment with using oil washes for this).</div>

I will be using some of the rather small first-issue HäT 1/72 Indian elephants as forest elephants for my"tribal troops." These will carry a mahout and two archers each (and no howdah).<br />
<br />
I am resculpting the ears and replacing the tusks with tapered styrene rods. I will also redo the tails on some of them.<br />
<br />
For size comparison, see one of these smaller elephants next to one of the proper Hät Indian elephants.<br />

As I begin to build my Siamese army, I wonder whether I should not also think about a Khmer army (of an earlier period) as well. If I do go ahead I might just paint up Newline Designs and HäT Indian figures as Khmers. The Khmers had a maiden guard and I wonder whether I can use the Indian ones... perhaps with head swaps?<br />

The HäT 1/72 elephants arrived in the mail today. I have 9 total now but I think I will only turn 3 into Siamese war elephants.<br />
<br />
I slightly bent the trunks, tusks and tails in hot water and fixed the new shapes with an ice-bath. I drilled the heads and torsos and connected them with thick copper rods instead of the molded pegs. This allowed me to position the heads in a way that is more pleasing to my eyes at least. After some more trimming and applying putty, they are now ready to receive the crew and superstructure. Well, it's a start anyway...<br />

I plan to make lots of "generic" Siamese foot that can, with some allowance, be made to stand for troops from southern/southwestern China (e.g., the Dian people for the Han Dynasty's campaigns to conquer Yunnan) and Southeast Asia (e.g., Siamese, Burmese, Laotian) from the first century A.D. to about middle of the sixteenth century. This is a lazy option that will enable me to bulk out various miniatures armies quickly.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
These troops wear either no armor at all or don a bamboo-type cuirass. I am mainly using 1/72 Caesar Miniatures figures (Philistines, Sea People, Early Arabs) with headswaps and some trimming. This is the first batch...<br />

To make a miniature Siamese army is to build some toy war elephants. Even if they did not play a deciding role in most historical battles, war elephants remained the prized symbol of (royal) military might well into the modern age (as seen in the 1866 photograph above) and would similarly feature as the major point of interest for your miniature Siamese army.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi33BKLLFbmmunIrva-XlMnLEC3zxG5onx4z02AV0jshGo1q_hRuDCGqx1HHfMUv7IDqxeVSvIOYcnC0cPAeev0i-Z4QkMJUOzsbErfV4bHaN2lP8CQJDTstv3lj4kpxTdm7PorbP_WQNVm/s1600/elephant_07.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi33BKLLFbmmunIrva-XlMnLEC3zxG5onx4z02AV0jshGo1q_hRuDCGqx1HHfMUv7IDqxeVSvIOYcnC0cPAeev0i-Z4QkMJUOzsbErfV4bHaN2lP8CQJDTstv3lj4kpxTdm7PorbP_WQNVm/s200/elephant_07.jpeg" width="183" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The war elephant allowed royalty and generals to engage in battle with each other in Homeric fashion. The classic arrangement as described in Thai military manuals was to have the high-status warrior sit in the front where we would normally expect the mahout or elephant driver to be. He or she would be helped by two soldiers who could be found further back on the elephant. One would sit on a raised dais that functioned as an open howdah <i>cum</i> armoury where an assortment of pole weapons were kept; the other would be the mahout who directed the elephant's movements from the rear. The difference between this classic arrangement with a 3-man crew and the four-man crew shown in the 1866 photograph above may be the addition of a hand-gunner (possibly the second man from the right in the photo).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The war elephant and its crew was to be protected by an elephant guard of four infantrymen who would take up station near to the side of each elephant leg. This was a practice that can be traced back to c. A.D. 1200 at least, as this artifact shows:<br />

Not entirely surprisingly, 1/72 or 20mm Siamese war elephants are not available commercially. I will therefore have to make some myself and the current plan is to use the 1/72 HäT Macedonian and Indian elephant sets (both of which feature Asian elephants) as base and build the rest. Should be fun!<br />

I rushed to put some paint on the first twenty of my converted Siamese figures just so I can see whether my experiment is going to work at all. Here's a peek at the two figures that appear to be furthest along in the painting process. </div>

These are the helmets that were made with the eyelets, which make them appear a little too tall perhaps. On the positive side, the "brass bands" are just the eyelet flange and do not need to be put in especially. Maybe okay for mass production purposes? They do seem to paint up nicely, as they say.</div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With Italy's conquest of Libya and Cyrenaica from 1911 on and its attempt to transform them into Italian colonies, the need to protect this region's exposed southern desert flanks, where nomadic raiders and restive Senussi could move free from Italian interference, grew increasingly evident. A string of forts was established across the arid landscape and their controlling presence amplified by desert patrols using first camels and, later on, motorized vehicles. Making Italian presence felt even in the deep desert required that the important oasis and caravan town of Kufra be conquered by an expeditionary force in 1931.</div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The open desert landscape of Cyrenaica and Libya was the roaming ground of the <i>Compagnia Sahariana, </i>which was first formed to impose order within a colonial context. After the move was made from camels to motorized vehicles, these mechanized companies became known as <i>Companie Auto-Avio Sahariane. </i>With the onset of war in the Western Desert, these units became an important resource for countering the British Long Range Desert Group's efforts to turn the southern flanks of the Italian armies through deep penetrating moves across the desert. One company deploying the AS 37, the most important vehicle used, played a role in the failed Italian effort to defend Kufra against the Free French forces (aided by the LRDG) that came up from Chad in 1941. From 1942-43, a new vehicle custom-designed by Viberti for desert patrolling was introduced and placed into service: the AS 42.</div>
<br />
Eventually, I would like to build an<i> Autosahariana</i> platoon using a mix of AS 37 and AS 42 vehicles.<br />
<br />
I started this project with two AS 42 Saharianas that I built from the Italeri 1/72 kit a few years back. I converted various 1/76 figures to make a crew for them and also replaced 20mm Breda modello 35 with an Ansaldo-Bohler 47/32 gun taken from the Waterloo 1815 Folgore artillery set. The painting is still a little crude and I do need to go back to clean up, weather more and add details.<br />

Following the practice of the late Qing government and early warlords, the Chinese Republic relied on imports of foreign
arms in the 1920s and 1930s to modernize its armed forces. Purchases from firms
in Britain, France, Italy, and Germany introduced a motley group of armaments
into the Chinese arsenal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As Britain and France had been the principal European
imperial powers that had sought concession after concession from China, there
existed mutual suspicions that created the conditions for a deepening
partnership between the Nationalist Chinese government and Germany that was
only ended in 1941 with Japanese insistence. After an Anglo-Japanese agreement to take control of its important concession of the Liaotung peninsula and its capital
Tsingtao during WWI, Germany sought to re-insert itself into East Asian
affairs.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Military advisers and favorable sales of military equipment became the
cornerstone of this rapprochement between two countries that had good cause to
resent the victors’ peace at the Treaty of Versailles. Sino-German cooperation
allowed Chiang Kai-shek to base his military modernization on the creation of
several German-trained and -armed divisions. This was to be the Republic’s “New
Model Army” that would carry the burden of showcasing a modern China.</div>

These German-trained divisions formed the core of the forces that Chiang Kai-Shek committed to fight in Shanghai in 1937. They acquitted themselves well through dogged resistance although the nature of urban warfare did not allow them to use their dearly-bought mechanization to advantage. Eventually these divisions were ground down by attrition and lost the greater part of their numbers and (German) equipment.</div>

The Corps of Guides was an elite unit that was celebrated in Kipling's "Ballad of East and West." During the Second Anglo-Afghan War, it formed part of the Punjab Frontier Force. Never a large and numerous formation, it usually fought in detachments in support of other units. Different ethnicities made up the various companies of the Corps: there were 2 companies of Sikhs, 1 company of Punjabi Muslims, 2 companies of Pathans, 1 company of Dogra, 1 company of Ghurkas and 1 mixed company.</div>

I am now about 70% done with these nice Foundry Miniatures Guides infantry figures from their Northwest Frontier range. They are all depicted as wearing khaki turbans (albeit still with red kullahs) and poshteens which makes it easier for me to paint them. Their cavalry counterparts will be more challenging on account of their blue-on-white turbans.</div>
